Hi everyone, obligatory "this is my first post here."
I bought a 2006 Saab 9-3 2.0T from a junkyard (they sold it to me in running condition) in October. It had 82,000 miles on it, and I've only put a few thousand more since then. It's been a pretty great car so far. I think I'll keep it for a while.
Since I got it, there has been a Steering Lock Malfunction error every time I start up the car. I haven't been worrying about it too much because it hasn't affected anything about the drivability of the car. The key still turns in the ignition (though sometimes it takes a couple tries/seconds before it lets me put the key to the run position) and the engine turns over and the steering wheel doesn't lock. But the message is starting to bother me, so I'd like to address it. I've noticed that even without the key in the ignition, I can turn the steering wheel from lock to lock without the lock engaging. This is much different than the other posts I've seen about this notorious Steering Lock Malfunction. Most I've seen have completely stopped the car from turning over or even having the key turn to the run position.
Basically, I'd like to make it so the message goes away, but from the little research I've done, I've potentially either got to replace the CIM and/or the Ignition Module, both of which sound pricey and both of which require Tech2, which I don't currently have, and I'm not sure any local mechanics have it near where I live.
Potentially related because of the CIM controlling multiple things: The windshield wiper stock, when on intermittent, doesn't have a consistent time between wipes. I can turn it up or down with the thumb wheel, but it seems to have an electrical problem since at any given selected speed, the wiper speed can change without notice, and it doesn't necessarily match the speed I selected.
How do I go about addressing this issue? Thanks for any advice. Appreciate it.
