Headlight washers, how do they work

Hey guys, this may be a dumb question but how do the headlight washers work and does the car in the picture below have them? It looks like it does but how the heck would I know, I don't even know how they work. I imagine that they blast a jet of windshield washer fluid on the lights but not sure.

Thanks,

J51

I agree. The "warts" are ugly. I wish my 07 had the flush mounted popups.:(

thanks for the response. That is very useful information. did you have a chance to look at the picture? Does this car have them?

Thanks again,

Yes it does. This car has the 04> washers. The 03 versions were hidden below a plastic cover and popped up when operated.

I vote for the warts. My 9-3 has them and they work quite well and there's less to break. For the OP, they squirt just like the windshield washers do, but on every 5th (or 10 minutes?) pull of the windshield washer stalk. They fire whenever the headlights are on, regardless of switch position. So on a 'stock' car, they will *always* fire. One added bonus of the DRL disable is that the sprayers won't fire if the lights are off, which is the way it should be. Saves from always making a mess of the hood and saves a ton of fluid too...

Some people say these things are useless, but I disagree. For anyone that lives where the roads are salted in the winter, they are fantastic for clearing off caked-on salt spray and do make a difference.

My wife's car, the '05 Volvo S40 in my sig, has pop-up-style washers. Yes, it looks just a bit cleaner, and kids think it's a great trick.

But we've already had to have one of the mechanisms replaced because it wouldn't close all the way when it was cold outside. I also worry that heavy snow or ice could 'seal up' the sprayers and that could lead to lots of little stripped plastic gears.

I like the warts!;)

I have the popups and I could see them being 'frozen stuck' during the winter months. Only had my car since May.
I find them 'gimicky' but fun to spray people with..LOL.
I don't know how useful headlight washers are unless you're in a rally-race and you're getting Mud on them..at night... then likely you've already got 4 large Rally beams on the hood or roof of your car ?!?
