The exhaust manifold on my 8v C900 has been repaired twice due to cracks. The cracks were welded by a garage. Not sure if they had to remove the manifold first though.

The repair job has lasted 3+ years though.

I've had my T8 manifold welded (2 cracks) up about 18 months ago, they did remove it from the engine.. but it was/is worth it..

any good welder can do it

The exhaust manifold on a normally aspirated engine is easier to reach, so the repair might be possible in-car. If I have time, I'll find the previous owner's recept for the work on my car and judge from the cost of that whether engine removal was necessary.

Exhaust Manifold crack

The manifold (Not the engine) has to come off. That is the only way they can weld the crack which continues at the bottom. The removed manifold is then bolted temporarily to an old head and welded. That temporary bolting is to stop the manifold from twisting from the welding process. I suppose that if you do not have an old head you can bolt or clamp it to a strong plate.
Before having an indy do it, I tried bogging up the crack with araldite. Smells terrible when the heat of the manifold burns it off.
When it cracked again a year or so later I had a second hand later model 16 valve manifold put on and no cracks some 10 years later.

 

I replaced my cracked exhaust manifold with a junkyard find. Only cost $15.

 

Man i have thrown dozens of those away. Try english-swedish or that place on howell mill they have some real junk there. Should be cheap cause i would have been glad to sell em.

i think somebody asked that question before, and i THINK the answer was no...

but i'm not quite sure. :roll:

 

No T16's manifolds can't be used on T8's is as simple as that

A durable welding/brazing repair on cast iron requires a heating/cooling cycle in an oven, so the manifold has to come off the engine.It's probably cheaper (and less hassle) to buy another one from a junkyard.

 

OK, if it was not a T16 manifold they replaced my old T8 with it must have been a later model 8 valve. I know it looks very different including the fact that the later one has an oxygen sensor (which was not on the earlier one). I'll ask my indy.
