Saab 9-3 Worn Automatic gear shifter bushing diagnosis

Hi All,

I've a diagnostic question. Unsure if it will make a difference to the solution by asking, but here goes....

Same old story I'm reading is happening to a car I bought.
Go to put it in Drive and it stays in neutral.
Going down to 3rd on gear stick (Automatic) puts it in drive.
I understand the bushing wears but can be at both ends of the cable.
Looking at the gear stick it's showing in third, but the dashboard display shows drive, and on pressing on the gas peddle I am in drive.
Is there any way to tell which end bushing on the gearbox cable is more likely to have worn and causes this? E.G because the gear stick is out of sync = Gear stick (back end of cable) bushing is worn?
(Diagnosis without actually physically looking at it or most likely cause)

Cheers
