Let's talk wheels and offsets and what fits

Alright.
So I sold my 2008 Aero Sedan and just bought a 2008 Aero convertible on Friday. First thing I'm doing is getting new wheels and tires.
So here is the question.

I am buying an 18x8 wheel with a 40ET on it. I'll use the typical tire size of 235/40/18. I'd like to put spacers on them to push the wheels out a little but I don't know how far I can go before I run into rubbing.

How many guys on here have done this and how many mm spacers did you use?
So if I have a wheels that has a 40ET on it and I buy a 20mm spacer. Does that mean I now have basically a wheel with a 20ET?

I'm still a little green on this topic.

I think a 20mm spacer is too much--wheels will stick out like bad thumbs.

On the Turbo X I have OZ Alleggerita HLTs of exactly that offset and 18x8.0 (with 235/45-18 Michelin Alpins) for winter. After 5 minutes of experimentation I had to take off my H&R 15mm spacers (all round; hubcentric; longer bolts). I think the car looked ridiculous and there was some rubbing at the front in a tight turn. I could have got away (maybe) with the rears spacers only...but I believe in minimizing the inherent understeer of FWD (and to some degree XWD) setup.

However, with the stock Turbo X wheels 18x7.5 of same offset [I think!] the spacers are about right and give the car a more aggressive stance.

My sweet spot (with the Alleggeritas) would be to get some Maptun 3mm spacers (you can use the stock bolts-- you'll need to go longer on bolts if you went for Maptun's 5mm version). It would be a very subtle difference...but you've already gone wider than any factory issue with an 8 inch width.

Thanks, great response.
So if I have a 40ET 18x8 wheel, how many MM spacer should I use to get it to the aggressive stance you've noticed?
Because I see that the correct ET is between 35-45. And if the wheel is a 40, using 3mm would only bring it to 37, correct? Or am I reading this wrong?

Yeah. I love the car, but living in Southern CA, I decided I wanted a convertible. Here's a couple pics of the sedan I sold. I won't post pictures of my convertible until it's done :) Right now it's just a stock Jet Black Aero.
I have wheels on order.

I run 18x7 with a 41mm offset. 215/45 tire.

I have 15mm spacers in the front and 25mm spacers in the back.

I do have minor rubbing issues in the back, but I'm also lowered on H&R springs. So it's just when I hit hard bumps or have weight back there. And all it does is hit the plastic fender liner, it doesn't cut up my tires or hit the actual metal fender at all.

Here are a couple pics showing how it sits.

i run 25mm in the back too (lowered on megan junk) . i havent run into any rubbing issues but i also dont let anyone sit in the back of my car :nono; Im also on 16s most of the time. i did have 17s on it at one point and never rubbed then either.

Ok. So if I wanted the exact same stance as you, I need to figure out what to do.
To match your stance, what would I need running 18x8 with a 40ET?
Maybe just 10mm spacers.
Also, has anyone used 245/40/18 tires and been ok?

Do you have the wheels and tires already? (Curiousity: What are they? And what colour is you convertible? Also: What size wheels did you have on your Aero sedan?)

If you don't have tires then a 245/40-18 might give you what you're looking for without spacers (or plus 3mm :)),filling the wells too.

The geometry is no doubt different on my car as compared to FWD (never mind aero convertible). The look you want is dependent on ride height too (as ahfunaki above states).

I've been re-thinking my whole 'spacer philosophy': Less (mm) is more...

Remember the difference between a beautiful woman and a plain one is, indeed, a few mm :)

I do not have them yet. The wheels are being drilled now (kind of like the beautiful woman you're talking about). They are Boss 328's in black pearl. They do not stock 5x110 I learned and to have that bolt size Boss makes them to order. So I won't receive the wheels until late December.
The car is Jet Black and I think these rims on that car will look fantastic. And if not, oh well. Like most of you, I just love cars.
But this car I just bought is temporary. I'm already planing on selling it in Spring. I REALLY want a white 09' Aero vert. That is my ultimate goal. But this black one I absolutely stole, so I had to buy it.

Back to the topic. I think the 245/40/18 might actually throw off my spedo and make me look like I'm driving more miles then I actually am?

Hello All, I think this is a relevant place to post this question: I have the opportunity to get some 02 stock 9-5 aero 17 inch rims. I would like to use these on my TurboX for a winter wheel setup. Will they fit and work? Thanks in advance!

the i believe the 9-5 has a higher offset than the TX so the issue would be whether or not they clear the brake calipers...

I'm running a staggered setup on my 9-3. Front wheels are 8.5" wide wrapped in 245/40R18 and rears are 9.5" wide wrapped in 275/35R18. The wheels are currently off for the winter but I had 5mm spacers on just the rears this past summer. Next summer, I will see what kind of stance 5mm on the fronts and 10mm on the rears look like.

www.willtheyfit.com will give you all the compartive info on different tire sizes and rim sizes. With that et, you can probably do 10mm up front and 15-20mm out back.

Your tire size is kinda big, I plan on running 8.5x18 et 30 1552 Tarmacs this spring with either 225 or 215 40 18s., most here will feel my tire choice is to thin, but I'm not driving a race car so it doesnt matter. Thinner will look better.

ET30?? Was that a typo??? Are you going to roll the arches or something? No way that will fit - it will stick out for sure.
