Omg I took my folding mirror apart.

Fed up with my wife compl.. I mean fed up with something broken that Should Just Work, I broke out the angle grinder. Our 2005 Saab 9-5 estate has folding mirrors (in other places this might be called a memory function?) but the right side just doesn't work properly anymore.

Watch below for what I grinder off (marked red errr green.) I hope to put it back together again but I'm not sure how. Oh well if I break something it needed replacing anyway. :cheesy:

One of mine used to stop half way. The other has been replaced so runs faster. On my sluggish one, I pushed a blade between the two parts of the exterior pivoting joint, prized it apart enough to run the edge of a cloth through to remove some dirt, then blasted it with spray grease.

It now completes the travel consistently, although not as fast as the replaced one.

Summary - dirt accumulation could be a contributing factor.

I just went through this ordeal. Needed to replace the nonfunctional yellow dimming mirrors anyway. I got some .5A polyswitch fuses from Amazon (10 for $5). Pulling it all apart is a pain. Getting the old mirror off and even harder getting the clips holding the cover loose. There are 4 clips for the cover. While its apart I measured the current. It uses 0.5A until it hits the stop and the goes to 1.1A. The 0.5A fuses seem to work OK. They disconnect after about 10 seconds, maybe less. Easiest install is to just crush the old fuse. Inside is a disk if conductive rubber with two foil connections. A little heat and the foil disks fall off. Solder the new fuse to the wires sticking out. I just bent them back over the housing. There really isn't anything near them in that position they could short to but a little bit of electrical tape over the wires may be a good precaution..

Looking at the datasheet this seems a really crude solution with a limited life expectancy. At lease we now know how to replace the fuses.

I could find no dimmable mirror glass and a price that was rational ($160 for something with a 6-7 year life expectancy?) so I went without. I paid $15 ea on eBay for heated mirror replacements. Its not worth 10X for the dimming.

On mine there was no seal between the cover and the black frame on either mirror. Are you seeing some dirt buildup? Or maybe someone in the past glued the cover on because the clips broke? They are not designed to be particularly removable and seem to fight the process. 3 of them broke on mine in the process.

The dimming mirrors in the visibility package had black plastic trim around the mirror glass itself. I hit a dear a couple of years ago leading to the destruction of the dimming mirror which ended up being replaced with a regular (still bi-convex) mirror glass that is actually slightly larger. I miss the dimming though but its on the passenger side so I can live without it. Also, the original mirror was starting to become discoloured…
