Bumper Scratch removal

I loaned my car to my brother and he managed to damage it once again....

This time it was a huge bumper scratch. Any ideas on how to remove this scratch? There's a slight layer of another car's paint on it. I Googled it and I read that some use fine grit sandpaper with lots of water, then put rubbing compound, and wax on it.

I took auto body in high school and I have done quite a bit of painting work. I have removed marks off of bumpers just like the one you show in the picture by using paint thinner on a clean rag and just wiping the marks right off of the bumper. 'You can't use just any thinner'! There are different types and strengths of thinner. Some of the thinners you can buy in Home Depot will not take those marks off because they are not strong enough. The paint thinner that will take those marks off is the paint thinner you buy at the local auto body paint supply store intended to thin auto paint with. That type is very strong. The reason it will take the marks off is those marks are usually paint off of another car or a parking garage pole. This will not hurt the paint on the car and will take the marks off within ten seconds of rubbing.

Do not sand those marks off that I see in the picture that you have provided due to that will take way too long and you will have to buff the shine back in the finish on the sanded area of the bumper. It can be done this way, but will take about 50 times longer than wiping the bumper off with the right thinner for ten seconds. You can also sand through the finish on the bumper and it will look horrible.

My friend owns a car wash that also does full service detailing and they wipe the marks off of bumpers with thinner like I'm telling you to do also. It is the best and fastest way to do it when the paint is not really damaged (it just has marks on it). The picture of your bumper looks like the paint is not damaged and only has marks on it. It looks very minor to me, but I would not tell your brother that. I would forever use this as an excuse not to ever lend him my car. I would tell him the detail shop charged you $100.00 to take those marks off of the bumper and they said the car was hit so hard that they were surprised the air bags did not go off. You have to make him suffer for marking up your Saab like that...

You see this type of damage all of the time in Chicago, it's not your brothers fault. I happens when you're parallel parked and someone who has terrible parking skills and can't judge distances, (usually a woman) tries to squeeze their car in behind yours, misjudges the distance and rubs the front edge of their bumper into your rear bumper. The only solution is to not parallel park around other people.

It's ok out here in Utah because we like that kind of thing.

Who set the standard for parking space measurements? All across the country it's small painted parking spaces everywhere you go. I always park my car where most people refuse to park due to it's a little farther away from the entrance of the store.
