well can you imagine my surprise when a letter from saab fell on the door mat today recalling my wife's 12 year old 900 vert to have the airbag module checked and replaced if necessary, talk about sevice

it doesn't say what the recall number is or what cars are affected all it says is my wife's car

"falls within the specified chassis range of 900 models that require the air bag control module checking and where necessary replaced by an Authorized saab repairer"

the vin number is YS3DC75J2S02****

the irony is the air bag seems alright where as my 9-3 has a fault

Does a recall like this apply to subsequent owners? I would love to have them check mine out, though the dealer by me will reset the SRS light for free.

I think a call to the dealer would clear it up. If it is a world wide recall, then they would be alerted.

They can probably get the record from DMV for a case like this. I am not sure how the law works regarding privacy, but this is deemed a safety concern.

Don't worry Trollhattenschatten, big brother is watching. ;)

they know my address?! are they spying on me?! seriously though how would they know? i never contacted them

when you buy a car in the UK you have to register it with the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency, DVLA for short, they keep records of all cars on the road and whether the road fund licence if valid, all Saab UK need to do is check with DVLA who owns the cars affected and they will get names and addresses of the owners

This recall and TSB was initiated via the NHTSA in the US in 2002 and affects 1995 verts. The control module was determined to be subject to possible leakege by an electrolytic capacitor and abnormal amounts of condensation from the A/C, making it prone to electrical fault. See below:

Recalls Summary
Make / Models :
Model/Build Years:
SAAB / 900
1995
Recall Number: 02V308000

Summary:

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE AIR BAG ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) IS DESIGNED TO SENSE AND DISCRIMINATE FRONTAL IMPACT EVENTS, COMMAND AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER DEPLOYMENTS IN A TIMELY MANNER, AND PERFORM CONTINUOUS DIAGNOSTICS OF THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. DUE TO THE POSSIBLE INSUFFICIENT SEALING OF THE BOTTOM OF AN ELECTROLYTE CAPACITOR, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR IT TO LEAK ELECTROLYTE WITHIN THE AIR BAG ECU. ALSO, IN HIGH HUMIDITY ENVIRONMENTS, THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE AIR CONDITIONER CAN CAUSE RAPID COOLING OF THE ECU, WHICH IN TURN MAY CAUSE THE FORMATION OF CONDENSATION WITH THE UNIT.

Consequence:

IF THIS MOISTURE COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE ELECTROLYTE FROM THE CAPACITOR, IT FORMS A HIGHLY CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL THAT COULD CREATE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT. THIS ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD TRIGGER THE AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW AIR BAG ECU. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 4, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.

Notes:

SAAB RECALL NO. 15012. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

Do not assume the SRS light is the airbag. Mine never came on before the recall and did not until mauch later. Tech II indicates it is a faulty seatbelt tensioner sensor in my case.
