I think this is definitely possible. Lots of so-called snake oil additives have some benefits in some circumstances... really, nobody sells a thing that never does anything. To me the risk with additives is just collateral damage - adding viscosity improvers that cause wear on pumps or stop-leak products that can create clogs. If there is no chance of collateral damage and all you want is a few more months before balling it up and throwing it away, what harm is there?

Anecdote: For our Lemons car, our pit chief thought it would be fun to add a bunch of Prolong (VI) into the engine oil to see what happened. After the first race, we took the motor apart and even after the oil was gone there was literally globs of Prolong in the head. We used it again the second race, and at some point some asshat crashed into the oil cooler and we lost all the oil getting back to the pits. But that Prolong was still there and I am positively convinced it saved the motor. I'm also positively convinced we lost 10hp to it and it's probably why the turbo ultimately died. Is Prolong snake oil? Sure. , But all in all it was a fair trade. :D

If I had a quirky BW37 I would definitely try some snake oil. Worst case you're out a few bucks, best case it keeps running. It's not like it's rebuildable at this point. Nothing wrong with delaying the inevitable.
