SCL removal Steering Column Lock

So I found out today working on a customers car you can get a failed SCL out without cutting. My dremel tool was to big to get in there to just cut the bolt head off.

You will need a small pry bar (smaller is better because of the tight space). Tighten the 5mm hex key bolt until you can’t anymore due to the blocking pin. Then, get the pry bar wedged on the body of the SCL and under the lip of the retaining bolts head (see my photo).

Start prying and eventually you’ll get the head to clear the mounting hole lip and the SCL will kick outwards. The bolt head will be wedged in the resting block sleeve but a few more pulls on the pry bar after adjusting where you are leveraging the SCL body will get it out with no damage to the receiver on the steering column.

I did this with a local saaber I was helping out and they choose not to fully reinstall the replacement to not have any drama when the replacement I sourced fails. I found I didn’t have to back out the retainer screw like WIS says to (because it assumes you’re fully installing it) and I was able to add the new module without any issues and the car started up and had no SCL errors with the new units retaining bolt fully screwed in from when I removed it from the part out 9-3.
