Replacing throttle body. Tech 2 or software calibration required?

Howdy all,

Following on from previous problem
http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130333

I am about to replace my throttle body

I have printed out the instructions from

http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/20041006.Saab_9-5_throttle_body/

and am keen to get cracking!

About 6 months ago the CEL came on and I limped to the nearest dealership (I was a long way from home). They suggested the throttle body was on the way out and gave me the option of a new throttle body or a software re-calibration. I chose the cheaper software option and the car fine until the thread above.

Back to the main point.

Can I just follow the instructions, bolt on a brand new throttle body and expect the car to work fine or is there likely to be more to it than that?

Do I need to be able to clear the fault codes or will disconnecting the battery or pulling the 17 fuse have the same effect?

Does the throttle body need to be calibrated to mated to the ECU in some way?

All advice gratefully received before I start to dismantle the engine and leave myself with an immobile 9-5!

No .

It should be just plug and play. ECU calibration is not neccessary unless there is a problem (ie rough idle). I changed mine over a year ago with no need to calibrate.

As for unplugging the battery to clear the CEL - you should unplug it anyway to install the TB, so the CEL will be taken care of.

Well this looks positive.

Any tips on how to take off the electrical connector at the back of the throttle body (limp home solenoid?) I can't figure it out for the life of me.

The two bigger houses are impossible to remove as well. I can close the circlips but they seem to have welded themselves to the ports, I need about three pairs of hands.

Any tips?

You pull up the red part of the connector (shown here on the left) and it releases.....

Once you have compressed those hose clips, wiggle them firmly - give it some welly!

Just a quick update.

I have now installed my shiny new throttle body and am feeling very happy with myself.

The part (brand new and boxed, not a recon) was as a very reasonable ÂŁ150
and fitting was an ever better free!

Thanks for the excellent faq and advice on here. Without it I might have been shelling out more than ÂŁ400/500 at a dealer or indie.

The car runs so much better, super smooth.

Agreed. I have put in the reimbursed TB and the car is little smoother.
I also had some trouble removing the yellow cable connection. There was a metal ring that I had to pull apart but it was invisible

That little 'metal ring' caused me all sorts of problems!! As you say it's very hard to see it and even though I was trying very, very hard it still pinged off when I released it! So frustrating as I was trying to hold one end with a pair needle nose pliers and still broke free.

Because I like a challenge I was doing the job on a gravel drive so the metal wire was really, really easy to find.
