I am in the middle of fixing my air distribution flap and couldn’t figure out what this yellow thing is for, does it control the part that I marked in the second picture, and if it does,what does this whole thing do

i think that might be the "air distribution" or "air mixing" section of the HVAC system (depending on the exact element)

to interpret HVAC component location on illustrations and schematics, keep in mind that for LHD and RHD cars the whole HVAC box is positioned differently (either rotated 180 degrees, or control levers are located on the other side of the HVAC box etc..maybe Mimmi can comment on this ?) , to accommodate for the different location of the steering wheel, dashboard etc

there are some good instructions in WIS and a few very detailed TSB's for repairing the HVAC system, but i found this information hard to locate (in WIS, and finding the relevant TSB's for your car VIN number), and the HVAC functions and components is not very intuitive to access (in my experience).
Below i attached 3 of the main TSB's i found useful to understand my own HVAC system (RHD 2004 model), one of them has good detail on the specific replacement parts available for different repairs
also be aware the HVAC system had some significant changes in some components (saab made various gradual changes to address earlier faults reported ) for the 3 "series" versions of the 9-5 (eg 1998-2001, 2002-2005, and the 2006-2009 models iirc), and not all repair components (or instructions) are interchangeable (so check VIN number application for each repair part/component)

do note that with some of the HVAC "sleeve" repair parts available (for some of the plastic levers), there are both metal and plastic type replacement versions available for this. the saab OEM version is plastic (but is an improved version of the same original part), the URO (and some other after market brands) are metallic versions.
Mimmi (from this forum) has previously advised to use the plastic versions (and he knows his saab parts). i think the logic is that if metal replacement parts are used for this, then the weakest "stress point" in the mechanical moving parts of the HVAC system would then be a deeper (eg less accessible) part of the HVAC system, and if they break the whole HVAC system might need to be replaced.
