If it's an early build 04 it could be the fuel sender issue, although most of us have had it drop and read empty after we've filled it. Not stay Full.

 

Does the gauge drop to zero when you switch off the ignition? If no, then it's the instruments stepper motor for the fuel gauge. If it does, i bet on the sender.

yes the gauge does drop to zero when turned off. I guess i'll have to make another call to the dealer.

I think that the "sensor" for the fuel guage is incorporated in the fuel pump..
It is possible that it is faulty and will need changing. I am sure if you do some searching you will find the answer.

New sending unit/fuel pump installed by the dealer under warranty.

 

Originally the fix was replacement of the complete assembly, at a later date it was said only the "sender" or "Sensor" was replaced. Not the whole assembly which consists of pump/filter/sender(sensor). Many threads on this in the early SS days (03-4). Now it's out of it's infancy and just out of the toddler years...

Good query but I don't have a clue, my Dealer did it, about a two hour job as I recall....I think there might be a DIY. Stay tuned, one of the more mechanical types that's actually done it will have an answer.

If you have access to a lift or pit, I think it would be cake. I was looking around at the tank a couple weeks ago when I put my exhaust in. I was contimplating going with a stright pipe, instead of the stock setup which bends around the tank. Unfortunatly without replacing with a different shaped tank, this was impossible.
