Changing over to full synth tonight. Wanted to flush the engine at the same time, but I remember seeing a post awhile back that said it may not be a good idea to run additives/flushes. Any advice?

An engine flush of this type is a bottle of solvents, basically, that you put in the old engine oil before you change the oil, and then run for about 20 minutes. You drain this oil, so it's not left in their for very long.

It's not an additive, really, since you're not leaving it in. I'd advise it if you are going to full synth. I did it with mine about 3K miles ago, and haven't had any problems. For this one, you might be best off putting a new filter in first when you run it, so it can catch more of the gunk. Then put another new filter with the new oil.

I'm trying to decide if I want to do this again for my next change, which I'm doing in the next few weeks.

could you please specify what type of solvent to use? one bottle only? thx.
I used the AMSOil flush. It said one bottle, although you needed to make room by removing an equal amount of oil - took care of that by putting in a new filter.

I'm sure there are other products on the market.

I've heard only good things about Auto-RX. There's even a site where some guy did an independant test of the site, but I don't have the link. Search for Auto-RX and you should get bunch of hits.

The one thing about Auto-RX is that it's a long term flush. You add it after you change your oil AND FILTER. When I called Auto-RX, the guy told me to add it in addition to the engine oil. After you add it, you have to drive about 1500 miles, change the oil and filter again, then drive 2000-3000 miles without Auto-RX, then change your oil and filter again, and then you're done if your car has under 100k miles.

I just added it today after I changed my oil, so I can't comment personally on the results other than that my engine hasn't blown up yet.
