I'm looking at a red SPG today. I know it needs a CAT and the speedo is inoperative. I'll let you know what I find out about it.

I'm also considering a 2000 9-3 SE 5-dr. In California I'm wanting a 900T convertible too but not sure of extra maintenance issues with the tops.

What do you think would be more reliable?

The vert tops are no big deal as long as the motor works. I had to top mine up with some fluid. It can also be set for manual operation. Spedo cable is no biggie either.

I'd be real hesitant to buy a car that's been sitting for years unless I wanted a project. Sometimes it better to get one that works than to restore to former glory cost wise in the long run. I mean if you buy a car that's been well loved then you will always have a better car, yes?

You don't know what that rusty one needs...(scary), it may need very little or thousands. The only question is are you a gamblin' man?

thanks Gurlie. A comfortable would be nice but I'm also contemplating relocation from West coast to East coast. We'll see what happens.
That's an 8 valve 900t, unless you're keen for a labour of love I'd pass it up. A K jetronic car that's been sitting for years is a long long long shot.

The fuel distributor gets dirty from evaporating fuel, the plunger sticks - this is repairable. The valves could be corroded clogging the Warm up regulator opening (what happened with mine), the whole fuel system would probably need a lot of work and $ to get rebuilt to get it running really right. My 84 900t sat for 7 years and I could spend half a day telling you about all the problems I had with it.

K jet is very expensive to replace the parts/get them rebuilt, although once you do, they likely will never give you problems again.

You never know, it could be fine. Based on what I know of K jet now you could be getting yourself in for a massive job..

I'm not trying to put you off but a car that is running when you buy it is much better if you're not big or experienced with DIY.

That looks like a worthy project for someone who's willing and able to put some elbow grease and money into a classic! If you're looking for a near term daily driver, that's probably not the Saab for you, but man if you have the time and willingness to put into it, the 8v's are fantastic cars. A good starting point makes all the difference in any classic 900. If you can go put eyeballs and hands on it, and it makes you feel right, count out 6 Benjis and get to work!
