I don't get why most people say that you would be better off to just go with the 3" downpipe and the saab sport exhaust instead of the full 3" exhaust? From what i can see there is only a $100 price difference so why are most people saying that the down pipe and sport exhaust are better? I know there was talk of necessity but why not have the full 3" for just $100 more. But there maybe somthing I'm missing. Just some thoughts as I am looking at purchasing one or the other sometime... hopefully soon. Thanks for the input:D

I guess the answer is to do with what stage you are at and what you want in the future. I've seen stated on here before that you will only need 3" all the way if you are pushing 300+ bhp.

On the other hand I have the 3" full exhaust running prob 240bhp but aim for 300+ in the future, so went for the JT...that and the small price difference as you say.

I think there was a thread talking about this not too long ago, but it has to do with how much power the engine has. It will take considerable power to have the saabsport 2.5 incher to be a restriction.

I just got done speaking with Jak Stoll on the phone about my future stage 3 setup. I currently have the 2.5 remus cat back. Although this is very nice, he highly recommended I go with the 3" all the way. He stated that when you are going to stage 3 levels of power the wastegate needs to open with minimal pressure, and a 3" downpipe to a 2.5 is not nearly as effective as a 3" full exhaust...also what should be mentioned is the flex pipe is not replaced on some brand X 3" downpipes...which leads to backpressure. Even with my limited knowledge, I would recommend going with the 3" full exhaust...it just makes sense especially if your going to spend the money to go to stage 3.

The point, as far as I have read, is maintaining exhaust gas velocity. Bigger isn't better unless you have the hp to back it up. As far as flex pipes go, my MP didn't even come w/ a flexpipe section, so I wonder who Jak is talking about. The point isn't price, as you could probably find a shop to do 3 inches turbo back cheaper than any of the online retailers. It's necessity. Why stop at 3"? Why not 4 or 5 if money is the only issue?

I am by no means the expert on this, I just read a bit about it in Corky Bell's book.

So bkrell from what you have read is 3" too much and would it hurt to have it on for a stage 3 or are you just saying it would be just pointless because it doesn't need to be that big?

just my 2 cents!

I just recently installed my exhaust, i went with 2.5 piping from dp to muffler and i've noticed my car slightly more sluggish then with the 2.25 stock pipe. I believe less back pressure is the causing factor.

For those that dont know my car i have the 3"dp from MP with race cat then the flex pipe and then the 2.5 straight pipe all the way back to the Saab Sport Muffler.

I must say its sounds better than the stock.......... Maybe when i get a stage 3 i will get max performance out of that setup.

I didn't notice any difference in power when I put in the Saab sport exhaust last week. Sounds better, sure. Spoolup was a little better. But, then I installed the Viggen ic. I tell ya, the 3"dp, better flowing exhaust and the ic have made a HUGE difference in power. Turbo lag is essentially gone and the car is a friggin rocket! We'll see how happy I am when the snow falls and the roads get icy.

If I had a manual gearbox I would have gone 3" turbo back. But since I am limited to Stage 2, around 250 hp, with the auto, no sense in spending the bucks for the bigger ic and exhaust. I am quite pleased with the gains I have gotten thus far. I have the MBC+A as well. I now have the car ready for the ECU upgrade to Stage 2. Won't mind not fiddling with that boost controller. I am having a blast with my car.:D

Well, you want to maintain velocity b/c as the exhaust cools (Ie in a bigger pipe) it slows down and actually can create backpressure. As for hp threshold, yes, I too have heard 300 hp or over for the 3 inch. Bell claims 500, but I have a hard time believing that. The stock exhaust, BTW, is 2.5 unless I am mistaken. the sport exhaust simply deletes the resonator and swaps in a free-flow muffler. Speaking of mufflers, little trivia on "turbo mufflers." They are actually just free-er flowing mufflers w/ less sound absorbing/deflecting properties that get the term from the fact that they were originally installed on turbo car exhausts. Since a turbo exhaust is naturally quieter, less sound absorbsion was needed. Otherwise, they are mundane mufflers.
