My 97 900S has a nasty whine coming from the transmission when it is in neutral. When I put it in gear, the whine turns to a bit of a gurgle and it makes all kinds of noise. The shift from first to second sounds even worse, though things seem to settle down a bit as I pick up speed.

I haven't gone any faster than about 20 mph, because I was just moving some stuff around, but I am afraid to go much faster.

Any suggestions?

I've got a similar problem with a '95 900SE v6 manual transmission. My saabtech said that its the gearbox on the way out--apparently the gearbox hits end-of-life around 100K miles.

Mine started to go around 85K miles with a mild whirring (not unlike an airplane turbine) in second gear, then third....etc. But then I down shift a lot which adds considerably to the wear on this item.

But its odd that yours is making noises in nuetral. Anyway, get it checked out by a specialist before you buy any replacement parts. If its the gearbox you can get a rebuild one for around 1,200bux--possibly much cheaper. But I'd make sure its dyno tested and warrantied. These guys are the only ones I've found that offer dynotesting and warranty on their transmission :

Good Luck.

This whining you are describing that is remedied by a new transmission, does it occur when you are in gear and simply rolling? When I am in gear and I'm not using the gas I hear a sound as I start to slow down. some said it was the throw out bearing? There is no sound when i am in neutral, have the clutch in, or when I'm on the gas. This sound when I am engaged and off the gas, what is it?

sounds like normal saab transmission niose, mine does the same, typical as one lifts the foot of the throttle and just rolling before using brake, it's normal according to a saab mech I talked to. It's pinion gearwheeel that makes this noise(or whatever its called in english)

Good! I upgraded to the mtf6003 (or whatever it is, after shopping for electronics my mind is a blur w/ all the numbers), so hopefully that will help safeguard my tranny. But tell me, when I am driving spirited, am I really jeperdizing my tranny much even if im not missing gears and really pounding on the clutch? I.e., just accelerating to about 5k on on ramps, the occasional 75mph in 3rd? It's just too fun with the turbo to take it easy, just want to be safe.

It whines and gurgles and makes all kinds of noise, in and out of gear. The sound is worse when I depress the clutch pedal.

It actually sounds a bit like the whine you hear when you are zipping along in reverse, except much louder and scarier.

noVAsaab,

if I where you I'd have a experienced mechanic have a look/feel how your gearbox handles, that defenately doesn't sound like normal transmission sounds.
100K miles end of life? mine has done 150K(about 240'Km) and show no signs of giving up life, my "house" mechanic(not a saab mech per se, but does them to) said theres virtually no way to kill a saab engine/transmission, he's wrong as it happens to any car every now and then, but they are durable me thinks(a cousin had a 9000 -89 that he ran up to 400'Km miles with original engine/gearbox and still running fine until scrapped, body was crap due to rust).

I think your clutch pressure plate or throwout bearing is screwed up. What happens if you sit with the car immobile, engine idling, car in 1st gear and clutch depressed?

Well, if I recall correctly, there is a mild squeaky/whiny sound before I depress the pedal. When I depress it, it makes a bunch more noise-- squeaks and whines. The clutch feels different, too, when I engage 1st gear and reverse... a little chunky/slippy maybe.

I remember a nasty whine as I took my foot off the pedal and hit the gas, kind of like a long "wow" sound.

Hey NovaSaab, did you have this diagnosed?

I'm looking for solutions. I want others' solutions to go armed to a known saab mechanic where I live to see if he says the same stuff.

Thanks! :p

Probably a worn out TO (throw out) bearing.

This is silent, of course, when the clutch pedal is not engaged; as soon as the spinning pressure plate hits the TO bearing, any noises would quickly become evident...This is why the bearing is changed at the same time the clutch assembly is.

Thanks!

Yea, a worn TO bearing makes sense...
