I Have a MY2000 with a B204E engine and have been looking at one of the Saab tuning kits (170bhp). All the blurb states the tuning kit for a B205E (2001). Whats the difference in the engines, or is it just the ECU?

B204E si what I have as well. Take look at some other tuning kits, which will give you up to 220-230hp in Stage 1, most of them do - BSR, Speedparts, Nordic Performance, Maptune, Hirsch... mine B204E is LPT with 154 hp stock so this comes as a HUGE improvement (70+ hp) and all that within "basic" tuning package.

Thanks, i've noticed that for £400 you can get +70bhp from the likes of BSR which is pretty amzing compared to the cost/result for a similare piece of kit for my 9-3SC (£560 for + 29bhp). But i know of a genuine Saab tuning kit going really cheap - its for the B205 and was just tyring to figure out the differences in engines.

"4" at the end denotes that it is a Trionic 5 engine, a "5" at the end means Trionic 7 engine. In other words: the 204 is the one that is reliable, the 205 is the one that sludges up and/or blows pistons and rods.

An ECU for a T7 engine will NOT work on the old T5... they are completely different systems.

Thanks Guys. Excuse my ignorance but is the Trionic unit actually the ECU or is it a lot more than that?

I thought 204 means 2.0litre, 4 cylinders (or 4 valves per cylinder) and E for ecopower... but I'm confused with "5".
The L, E and R stands for the amount of power, which is a function of the maximum amount of stock boost pressure. I think "E" stands for the low pressure turbo version. See definition below, pasted from the Saab EPC abbreviations list.
