I just bought a '97 900S (2.3L Auto).
It normally Idles at 1000 RPMs
Someone mentioned that was fine, but I thought I'd see what everyone else was doing as it seems high to me.
Any way to adjust it?

Not too long ago, someone asked the same question, either here or on Saabnet. Pretty much everyone agreed that their cars idle right around 1000 (where mine does, too), and that it's a little higher than most every other car they've owned.

idles around 1k, never realled owned a car before the 9-3. Drove a POS Ford Escort :x , wouldn't use that as a benchmark with which to compare--also don't remember where it idled. I have noticed a few other cars I've been in--as passenger--idle a tad below 1k.

Assuming everything is working correctly, including the TPS, IAC valve, engine temp sensor, etc, warm idle is set at 900+/-50 rpm.

If something is not working right, the ECU will default that component to a pre-programmed setting. For example, if the engine temp sensor is unplugged or broken, engine temperature will default to 8 degrees C.

If the IAC valve is bad or disconnected, or just not being controlled by the Trionic ECU for whatever reason, it will maintain an opening preset by a mechanical spring. This is supposed to insure a warm idle of "at least 1000 rpm" (Saab WIS).

If the IAC valve is dirty, and sticking, the idle might be off. Same thing if there is a big vacuum leak, the engine will suck in air through the broken vacuum line or evap canister purge line.

As posted above, most older engines seem to idle a little high, 900-1000 rpm.

I learned a few new acronyms yeaterday (TPS.....) but I am not sure what IAC is.

I planned a whole weekend of wrenching on my 900, Serp Belt and Pulley, Oill/Tranny flush, Collant level sensor, and now I want to try to see whats up with my idle.

Mine idled about 200 higher than what it does now (about 1100) until I had it taken in, they found a vacume leak, and everything else checked out fine.

The same for me and this, TTBOMK(to the best of my knowledge), cannot be adjusted as it is set by the ECU.
Read PMI's post on this..

And if this were really too high, then we would have transmission and clutch problems...
The actual RPMs, precisely measured by an instrument may be 900 or so..
