Hi everyone, I know this topic has come up a lot on the forum but i never seem to find a definitive answer to the problem.

I have a 2003 saab 93 2.2 TiD (saab engine) and cannot locate a tech 2. Iv looked up purchasing one but im afraid the prices range from astronomical to ridiculous.
I have seen people saying OP-Coms could potentially work like tech 2's however I also have read they only work as OBDE scanners.

Would love it if someone could clear the issue up for me with either an answer on if you can use an OP-COM or, if there is another alternative.

Cheers, again sorry for the re discussion about this subject.

No, unfortunatly not. I cant seem to find anywhere in the whole of lincolnshire who can do it. Mainly due to the fact that there are no saab dealerships left.

Also, I would quite like to do it myself. Would be usefull to have.

The whole issue is that tech 2's are too expensive for me to purchase. I cant afford the £500 needed to purchase one. Thats the whole reason I was looking for an alternative method for tech 2

If an alternative existed that information would be well known on this site. You are not likely to find what you are looking for. In order for something like this to exist someone would have to take the time to backwards engineer a Tech II unit to figure out the protocols and how to implement them. And that may not even be possible if measures were put in place to hinder or prevent such efforts (wouldn't at all be surprised, theres plenty of money at stake from forcing people to your own shops).

A guy has been doing something in this same vein by designing a custom aux in box to take the place of the cd changer. However, the protocol for the audio system is most likely just standard TCP, a protocol that is part of the Internet Protocol (IP) suite. (yes IP protocols can be used for private networks). The protocols for the Tech II system could be proprietary considering Saab's love for custom systems.

I'm pretty surprised you don't have ANY indy shops left. My impression of the UK is that it is pretty "saturated" with Saabs. The Northeast of the U.S. down about as far south as D.C. is like this and even with all the dealerships gone there are still indy shops survivng doing maintanence and selling used cars.

So I guess in short, take the hit and buy one or drive a couple hours.

Also, I hope you realize this is the 9-5 forum not 9-3.
