What Country Was The Saab Made For?

5 years later I have a question that may help me avoid tearing apart perfectly good Saabs.
Using the VIN is there any way to tell which country the Saab was made for? (not where it was made)

The VIN is specific as to the equipment being placed onto or in the car but does it include any info about the additional equipment required by some countries or is there any way to tell from the VIN?

For example, the US requires a fuel neck restriction, catalytic converter, EGR, and other emission equipment. Also required are mirrors that say objects in mirror are closer than they appear, safety glass, airbags etc. While Saabs generally have all of this worldwide, they may not have some items for many places due to local customs. (fuel pumps with large nozzles so no fuel neck restriction, etc)

So can you tell by the VIN? is there a website that will tell you?
I have checked all ythe normal ones but they are inconclusive.
Carfax, VIN Decoder, etc. Is there any other way to tell without opening the hood/bonnet and having a person look for the stickers?

Another Example;
Here are 2 VINs, 1 of them I know is not a US model for sure and the other I am unsure. (the V6 I am unsure)
YS3ED58E913040299
YS3ED59Z733023943

Any ideas would be appreciated.;ol;

1999 Saab 9-5 Vin: YS3EF45E9X3 (eliminated last 6)

My turbo is going out on my 1999 Saab 9-5. Based on the vin look up it has the B235e engine. I found a decent priced turbo with a 1 year warranty but it's for the B235R are they interchangeable? The difference in price is like half for some reason. Any input. I bought this car cheap but am starting to regret it...heater/ac blower went out, then the water pump, now the turbo. I would love to get this thing back up and running but want to keep my costs down...

Any input appreciate. I am new to this forum so if there is a better place to post this question please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!:D

Yes, the turbo from the B235R will fit (you will need to get some new coolant feed and return pipes or special copper washers for the ones you have and new banjo bolts)

In fact the turbo from the B235R is (1) more robust and less likely to fail and (2) make more power with a tune in your ECU.

There are numerous threads in the forum talking about swapping the Garrett (you have) for the Mitsubishi (Aero/B235R) turbo.

Thanks for the quick reply unclemilite...

I am having a mechanic do it. He said if I could find the part he would put it in. Can he find that stuff locally you think or should I order it for him as well?

There are a couple items in my VIN that don’t correlate to the chart.

The first twelve characters of my VIN are:

YS3ED49A4535

Have a 2005 2.3t, auto tran, 4door sedan.
The title says it’s an Aero.
