Well, I had a lot of (apparently well founded) respect for the new 2.5l turbo Subaru Legacy GT, and it was confirmed this weekend. My friend just got one.

250hp, 250lb-ft,
~200 lbs more than the Vig

We did a bit of cruising, myself with one passenger, and him with two passengers. There are not a lot of places to go and accelerate in my area, but I did find one straightaway.. I was rolling around a corner in first(I dont normally do that, but I had to see..) into a straightaway with him behind me, waited till he straightened out and layed on it in first gear, running it up till only a short way into third.

Low and behold, for first and second gear he GAINED on me!!!! I have limited experience running near different performance cars, but this is the first car that I have seen get closer to my rear view when I didnt want them to  In third gear, we evened out, and I feel that I would have pulled on him had we run through the whole gear. This is exactly what I predicted beforehand.

I got to drive it through some twisties too.. AWD is so nice coming out of a corner. You can feel all four tires straining to break free, but unlike in the Vig, none of them decide to actually break free. It seems like cheating.

Sorry for the long, not-necessarily-saab-related post, but I would trade one nice discussion comparing our cars to other interesting cars or about driving dynamics for six threads about adding a turbo to an NA saab. :cheesy:

I know the board says performance alongside modification but you've started a general 'compare the twitchy Viggen against a sure footed 4x4 skooby' more a general and workshop subject? [just a thought, I'm not being picky or my usual pedant self]

and I won't add a turbo to my N/A thread because it is so bloody good any way :cheesy:

I've driven a couple of these GT's. If I am in an area that warrants awd, but a good Audi is out of my price range, than these cars would be perfect. Just a tad more body roll than you need. But this can be taken care of. The interior is such a huge improvement over the previous body style, its not even funny.

A guy down the street from me has a nice 2.5GT and occasionally we catch each other coming down the side streets heading home and get into some cat and mouse games.

Neither of us have ever gone flat out, always just do some spirited driving. Nice car either way, very understated and clean if you ask me :cheesy:

Go from a 30mph 2nd gear roll... I doubt he'll pull at all, and wouldn't be suprised if you put a half car on him by the top of 3rd. 1st gear is worthless in all shapes and forms for racing in the Viggen unfortunetly.

Between his awd advantage, and your wimpy 1st gear disadvantage, you might never catch up to him, third gear or not.

Very refreshing honest mini-documentary:D

Not the usual "I live on the moon and run liquid Hydrogen to pass everything including comets" we normally get :cheesy:

Yeah, I wasnt sure where to post it, but after seeing the Viggen eats M3 thread, I thought a Viggen 'Not Eating' something would be appropriate. :D

I realize that I am at a huge disadvantage to him in first, and probably second gear; I should not have tried to sound so shocked, because it went as I expected, and the cornering was also as expected. I DO think I could take him in gear 3+, where traction is less of an issue and his extra driven wheels just become rotating ballast.

There are a few things I'm jealous of in the GT. It's got many similar features to my Vig, but everything's newer and the interior is just plain bigger. Great cruiser. And it definatly made the Vig feel a bit twitchy after driving it. However, I kind of enjoy the fact that it takes a bit more though and care to get the Vig through a corner as fast as possible.. more of a challenge.

Thanks for the comments. And, by the way, my hydrogen powered comet passer project is progressing nicely. Pics when I finally get a digital camera;)
