A 9:38 ratio final drive is now available.

The first prototypes have been produced and are being tested at the moment. I am collecting names of anyone interested in these crown & pinion sets on behalf of the manufacturer to put together a order list.

Lets get the bad news over and done with. The cost is 800 Euros with about 40 Euro postage. This is about £590. Proper serious money then.

Now onto the interesting stuff; the increased ratio will extend the gearing to give the following speeds / 1000rpm, compared to the standard 8:39 ratios

1000rpm 20mph vs 17.3mph
2000rpm 40mph vs 34.6mph
3000rpm 60mph vs 51.9mph
4000rpm 80mph vs 69.3mph
5000rpm 100mph vs 86.6mph
6000rpm 120mph vs 103.9mph

Or to put it another way, the following speeds are achieveble at the theoretical rpm of:

30mph = 1499rpm vs 1733rpm
70mph = 3498rpm vs 4043rpm

Please email me if you are interested at adam @ performance96 . co . uk

PS - I have no finanicial interest in this! The cost I have quoted is that which was quoted to me. I am simply trying to gather names at the manufacturers request just to speed things up abit.

The testing of the gearsets is complete. Delivery is due April.

Below is some information from the guy responsible:

The test of a group of 5 different set of wheels has after 12 months drive tests has now been concluded.

One of the problems with the changing the transmission to a 9:38 is the mostly the pinion shaft where the extra teeth no. 9 is changing geometry of the root with reducing the thickness of the root with 25 %.

The result from the very first tests months - change the material on the pinion shaft to a steel with a core strength of 1050-1350 N/mm2 and a hardening that still keep the strength in the root of the tooth.

The old origin Saab pinion with 8 teeth was hardened all trough, but because of the reduced root this method is not possible and therefore we have now chosen a hard deepness of 1.5 mm.

Saab 96 and a Saab 97 were both used for all tests taken place all through 2007. The cars were equipped with a Ström engine 1,85i with 115 Hk and the total test miles was about 25.000 km. At the same time different gear oil has been tested. The final recommendation became Castrol SAF-XJ full synthetic SAE 75W/140 oil. Not common cheep oil, but oil for Extreme Pressure Gears and diffentials.

The first 2000 km is driven with a Castrol SAF 75W/90 in order to get the surface cleaned and smooth, then change to Castrol SAF-XJ.

I'll let you know how I get on with mine - in terms of actual driving benefits.
