What is the life expectancy of a turbo and what is the price range to replace on?

Rusty, not the clearest answer but, "It Depends." Are you using a good synthetic oil? How do you drive the car? Let it warm up before spooling the crap out of it? Your 92 has the water cooled mitsu turbo which, in my experience, last a bit longer. Personally 150k should be no problem for a well maintained turbo. A good rebuild kit runs $100-200 if you do it yourself (surprisingly easy), having it rebuilt by a specialist would likely be double that. I'm not sure what a totally new unit would be, but my guess is 'a lot,' somewhere over $650.

Good way to check, pull off the elbow coming from the intake side (this is where the bypass valve is mounted) and wiggle the impeller. Should be very, very little (if any) play. My old T3 has close to 200k on it, and it's got about 1/16" of shaft play, but isn't making any noise yet. I'm planning a rebuild in the next year or so.

There is a company that will rebuild the turbos for $150 (Garrett) to $220 (Mitsubishi). They are called Blaast Performance (www.blaastperformance.com). I've not yet needed their services, but have heard good things about them.

Is there going to be a gasket or anything that I need to look for during removal? Is it a machined fit?

The intake side just has a rubber joint which connects the turbo piping to the turbo. You'll first remove the upper intercooler pipe, then you'll be able to access the pipe running from the mass air flow sensor to the turbo intake. As suggested, once removed you can check the shaft play by reaching in and wiggling it.

In the end, that will only give you an approximation of the current state of wear, but it will not give you any insight as to it's future longevity. They just go when they go, no real indicator of the fact before hand most often. Even a really noisy turbo can last for quite a while, when a seemingly fine turbo may self destruct before even reaching a noisy stage. The only real reason for preemptively replacing a turbo is that it isn't producing boost as it should or it is clearly failing/failed.

New to the turbo thing. Not really sure if its producing the power that it should other than the gauge in the dash. Don't know what to listen for. I'm currently running a straight pipe no muffler so I probably wouldn't know if its working by sound. How would I test it? I do not want to rag the car out. I just got the car, so I'm taking it easy on her.
