Ok, smoke and smells, sounds like the PCV breather system to me, yes its a well known fault on our cars.
If the PCV system breaks down the engine cannot "breath" properly this can cause smoking, fumes and can eventually lead to sludge and engine failure.
So firstly check all your PCV hoses, this has been written about here a lot so try a search, replace any hoses that have split or become squashy.
Use a very good quality fully synthetic oil and change it at 6000 mile intervals at the very least (many of us use an engine oil flush too)
If its too late for the turbo, well thats still no reason the get rid of the car, infact its a great excuse for an upgrade
