I just picked up a 2000 Saab 9-5 for the winter, and I am completely new to saab. The engine sounds extremely smooth, but while I am driving (manual) and it hits 2.5k rpm, the turbo sounds like it hums. I didn't know if that was bad, like a bearing or something.
Secondly, I expected a turbo to give it some kick, but it is very mild. The guy I bought it from said he had put on a turbo bypass because it lacked power and he wanted it to hold the boost longer.
Either way, I don't want to hurt the engine. I am completely about it lasting a looooong time. My other car is a 2007 mustang gt, so I don't care if I get power out of this. It makes a great daily driver any way you look at it, and I wouldn't care if the turbo was pulled out. I just want to make the best of it as long as I have it but don't want to compromise on longevity.

Thanks, and happy thanksgiving!

Something is wrong. The 9-5 can make your mustang take a run for the hills, it should have lots of power.

a "hum" you say. Sounds like the hooter valve is bad. Therefore Leaking turbo pressure.

OK firstly you didn't say whether you have an Aero or a LPT (S,SE, ARC, Linear etc). If you bought a lpt it doesnt have too much of a kick in the pants

a bypass valve is normally just used to plumb extra boost back in from the TB intake pipe to the turbo intake pipe to stop too much pressure in the system and is more a safety device than a performance enhancer.

Turbos make a whining sound, its because they are sucking in air and compressing it at a lot of rpms (think 40,000rpms)

It's hard to diagnose stuff that 'sounds' like on the net, so if you are really concerned find a decent independent mechanic that specialises in saabs and let them take it for a test drive to see if they can hear a noise/problem

Thanks for the response and tip...I will check that out.
but first...
whaoooo, dude are you serious??? My mustang has 300 horse and does 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. I am putting ram air on this winter :)...it is a start, but honestly, I am looking to get rid of it. HA, I like the saab better anyway and it only cost me 3900...not 35000. :-(

Unless your are a pro that can stand to slam gears, getting the 0-60 times that good is unlikely. No offence, just saying.

THe Saab 9-5 Aero has better mid range acceleration (eg: 40-120) than a Porsche 911 turbo.

If you were to sell the Stang and the LPT 9-5, then you could buy an Aero 9-5 that will give you decent fuel econ and 230-260hp depending on year and tranmission. The import factor is the torque, the 9-5 delivers huge amounts without a whole wack of cylinders. You can tune these cars to 350hp without serious modifications. They are fast cars, no question. They also go around corners well when the suspension is recent.

That said, I do not find the 9-5 quite as fun to drive as my slower and less powerful 20 year old Saab 900. TO each his own. I use my 9-5 for daily driving as it is more comfortable, easy to drive, and I do not feel so bad about driving it in salt and people hitting it in the parking lot. Finding replacement parts for a pristine 20 year old car is hard, and original paint is a very nice feeling. There is also something about driving a convertible all the time, not good for your head in an accident.
