i'm trying to learn more about my vehicle and maybe do more maintenance and repair myself in the future. in the meantime, how can i get more comfort with a mechanic?

should i be asking for more diagnostic information? inspecting the work on the lift? getting replaced parts? invoices?

i keep thinking 'really?' at the shop.

The only way I know of that really works is to take it to a mechanic a few times. At some point you will either figure that they are doing a good job, or you will say "really?" too often. If it''s a lot of "really?", then try another mechanic. If they all make you say "really?", well then....

You are going to have a heck of a time outguessing a mechanic, or even understanding diagnostic information told to you.

Sometimes the only way is to do the job yourself.

And then you discover that some jobs are a lot harder than the manual or the Internet tells you, and then you give it to the mechanic who does it in a hour and you pay happily.
