The brightness of the panel lights is controlled by as sensor on the dash. This also controls the brightness on the computer. The sensor looks like a clear, and very short, rod. See if all your dash lights are going up and down, if they are it may be either a loose connection or a bad sensor. But, if there are loose connections behind your dash, maybe one is related to your fueling problem. who knows?

Does it fade smoothly or sometimes bright, sometimes dim?

If the latter then i'd say that one or more of the bulbs had a bad contact. There are 3 bulbs that light up the display at the bottom of the dash and it's surprisingly still readable with only one left working but much nicer with all 3.
