damn car... I was going to clean it and take some photo's, but first I had to get some replacement tail light lenses as they let the car down. This involved going to my local specialist 30 miles away. So I go to get fuel, and as I set off on the dual carriageway (highway) the car cuts out

I was in the fast lane and had to ditch it into the centre reservation. Called the police and they came and shut down the lane :lol: . Luckily my mothers friend had a tow rope and came and got me out...

turns out the bottom clip on the dizzy cap had fallen off, the cap moved and the rotor smacked a hole in it:

It's running again now but it's held on with a cable tie, and I don't fancy taking the risk of driving it 30 miles and have it fall off again!

I'll probably get some pics later on in the week when I get a replacement clip

I think you should take a close look at your front motor mount. This is a very common thing to happen when that mount is shot. You get hard on the gas, the engine lifts and slams right into the hood of the car. This breaks off the distributor and the car dies...

I don't think I have ever heard of a clip just falling off. Most likely it was slammed off.

About the tail light subject, I also had dull looking tail-lights. But rather than buy new ones, I bought some fine polish for the car and polished them up. WOW, they look like new again! It only took about 2 minutes per lens. You can also get the stuff especially for cleaning up headlights.

I've checked the mount it seems fine, the engine stays put when booting it too, only the bottom clip was missing, it was still held on by the top clip, just wasn't seated properly.

RE: the lights, I need new ones, on the outer lenses the part which the torx goes into, this is missing, I only have two screws holding each tail on!

Was it the handbrake/1st-gear test you did on the front engine mount?
