So lately my car has been feeling sluggish and not as responsive. Also, I have been getting bad gas mileage (drove about 90 miles and tank is already half empty) and the tranny seems to be abruptly shifting gears from 2-3 when I accelerate slowly.

Yesterday I noticed that front tires seems to be almost flat. I quickly drove to the nearest gas station and measured tire pressure. It gave reading about 21psi-25psi on all four tires. So I filled them up with air up to 35psi.
Now the car seems much more responsive and its hard to notice rough gear shift. Is this just some psychological placebo effect or is that the effect from increased tire pressure?

21 - 25 is real low :nono;
I wouldn't trust a gas station reading either.

Get yourself an accurate guage. Digital read out types are a nice toy to have and also you'll be able to check them more regularly.
