Changed my oil yesterday with Mobil 1 15w50 Syn, and driving to work today noticed a ticking\tapping noise coming from the passenger side area... Its very audible inside the cabin but cant hear it that much listening in by the engine bay, im hoping its not the timing chain going.... But u also replaced my valve cover and didnt notice any slack on the timing chain..

Any idea what im looking at?

Thanks

Hmmm interesting, its just odd because before it was super quiet not a single noise coming from that are and now after the oil change it began... Could it be the 15w50 causing this? I use to use 0w40 but couldnt find it in 3 auto parts stores so just grabbed 15w50.

the difference in oil could be contributing to the noise but i think its a very good possibility that you have some bad lifters, when mine went out it was the same way, there was no noise and then it just started tapping

My view is that weight is a pretty heavy oil for winter, what little may remain of it in some areas, but for Chicago(?) it should be pretty cold up there still.

Soo... sounds like a oil flow issue. Are you hearing this noise at normal operating temperature?

I agree about the oil weight. That's way too heavy.

I wouldn't use 15-50 unless I was in Arizona in the middle of summer.

That's probably the issue that you're having. From what I understand... you generally want to lightest oil you can use. In these cars that happens to be a 40 weight or a heavy 30 weight. Ticking noise aside, you're killing your fuel mileage with that oil.

I mentioned some time back about an acquaintance of mine who has a 2.3L vert who uses 20W-50 :)o) year round and supposedly has no issues; granted, he and I both are in a more temperate area here in VA but I'd be willing to bet he has some noise, at least upon startup. He must have some serious miles on that thing to warrant such a thick oil.

Are you going to drain the 15W-50?

What weight would be fine for my car other than 0w40? Might take advantage of the jug at walmart but they dont carry 0w40 european formula in the jug.
