I know there's like a bajillion threads on that stupid gear. But I just want a second opinion.

So anyway, I made a financial decision, and bought a 1984 900 Turbo sedan. First day, reverse slid in nice, second day, pops out.

I'm really hoping the gear is ok, I've read it takes a ton of abuse to really hurt it. It's mostly just that stupid linkage. Anyone else have this issue?

The only real way to know if the gear is ok is by removing the cover and looking. I would not describe it as stout - I have definitely dealt with the aftermath of a one and done total gear destruction. The tendency to pop out is broadly related to load, and IME when it first starts happening drivers to get frustrated and impatient... all it takes is gunning the engine at the wrong moment to reduce that gear to uselessness. I would pull that cover off ASAP and see what you're dealing with... no point speculating when ten minutes of work will give you your answer.
