About half, maybe two thirds of the time I hook up my Tech II, Select 2003, 9-3 (9400), Diagnostics, it goes to the "No Communication" screen seen below. Tech II is using bus power (no external power line).

I've checked the connections of the Tech II and they seem fine. I haven't yet cleaned the connector and checked the pins, but I thought I'd ask here for other things to check while I get some contact cleaner and do that.

It connects much more regularly when the engine is off. Shutting off and restarting doesn't always seem to help although at some point I will finally get a proper connection.

Yesterday it went to the second snapshot shown below. That was new. If I let it fall back a notch, it will sometimes be connected, on the expected menu, and will work fine. Sometimes not. Some days going through the process again works, without me going near the cable or moving it.

Yesterday I wanted to do some on-the-road monitoring and it was connected, but within driving a few hundred feet it went to the No Communication status. I really don't think it is the connection as sometimes I hook it up, access the Diagnostics properly, start the car, and then it's fails when I go back in. I'm careful not to actually move the connector when I do that.

Ideas on other things to check? Unfortunately I don't have another Saab to test against these days.

I suspect this is the car's connector. It happened frequently on my 2002 SE, but it never happens on any other car, Saab or otherwise. Because it works fine with eight cars and not the ninth, I gotta blame that ninth car. ;) It was always fixed by unplugging and replugging a couple times.

Interesting. I will have to get in there and work on the connector a bit. Clearly it's getting power, so maybe it's just the bus lines I need to focus on.

Check all the "pins" on the car connector. Sometimes they can get unlocked and pushed back into the housing. Use a small probe, preferably non conductive and push on each pin. If it pushes out the back, remove it and gently bend the small tang/lock that holds it in place then reinsert and see that its snug and locked. Had this issues on my 03 9-3 Arc and a couple were loose, fixed the problem. YMMV

Ya ,with the history of Saabs and needing repair thru the years the pins or connector could be worn right out, or pushed in from repeated use. :ROFLMAO:

I had/have the same issue with both of my Saabs. My Tech II is a Chinese clone and I have read on the Tech II Workshop forum on this site that the cable that comes with the kit is often the culprit. I purchased a new cable from Amazon for $25, but have only used it once so I don't know if it solved the issue or if it was chance that it worked.

Have run across another reference for the the brake related communication failure. The ABS/antilock module on the brake pump/reservoir/modulation assembly has apparently a history of age related communication failure and requires rebuild. I have two 9-5s that require this service, but the message for the K-line is the same on my tech-2. Looking for local (regional) rebuilder for them. Approximate prices range from 99.00 USD less shipping on e-bay to almost 200.00 USD.

Been looking into rebuilding my own. Apparently they have the same failure mode as most Saab electronic failures: solder joints that go bad. That's an easy fix... opening the unit seems to be the difficult task.

I found some rebuild videos for similar Bosch units from other cars on-line but not the same packaging.
