What does the S (Sport) setting on the shift knob of an automatic really do? I've read the manual which tells me what it should do, but what does it actually do? I don't notice any difference either way. Is it possible that it is broken?

Please don't tell me to get a 5 speed...it is not an option in our family.

Sport delays the upshift of the automatic gearbox. In other words you hang on to the gear you are in a little longer, thereby accelerating more quickly than in normal mode, as the engine is revving a little quicker.
