Hi All,

I have a 96 Aero 5sp Manual - great car and has done 126k. It has recently developed a noise in the frontend which appears to be speed related. It is especially noticable when slowing down under brakes and almost rumbles when the car is coming to a standstill. There is no vibration - but it sounds like a bearing of some sort. It doesn't appear to get worse when the car is turning in either direction eg wheel bearing.

I am going to check over some things on the weekend- any thoughts?

It was the tyres!!

I took the car to my local service centre for the first service since I have owned it (128k service) and they said it was the tyres being worn causing the noise - the wheel bearings were fine. It makes sense as the lower control arm bushes are slightly worn as well which could be a reason for the tyres to exhibit wear on the inside of the tread. So they swapped the front and rear tyres which has made a difference to the sound - it comes from the back now. I will have to change the tyres and replace the bushes before I get a wheel alignment done.
