some cool stuff - interior mods

I have wrapped a spare dash in Ultrasuede. It's a synthetic suede material, often used in furniture applications. I've also started wrapping the kickpanel too. Next will be the glove box door. The whole point was to cut down on glare, but the ****pit now looks like a Le Mans racer / WRC interior!

I felt I had to fill in the little cubbyhole on the top of the dash, otherwise the Ultrasuede wouldn't fit seamlessly around the corners of the cubbyhole. 3M 77 spray adhesive was used to bond everything together. The filler in the cubbyhole consists of some piece of puckboard (the stuff that lines hockey rinks) and some wood. I used a brad nailer to punch a few nails through them all, but they are also secured with some silicone. Then to fill in the edges, I used some resin made for fixing bumpers. I was afraid that with normal bondo, it would crack, as the dash is slightly flexible.

The Ultrasuede was purchased at a local 'couture' shop, catering to (mostly) females who like to make their own dresses and stuff like that. Felt kinda weird walking in there with my spare dash under my arm, asking to see the Ultrasuede.

Oh, the pictures kind of bring out a different colour to the Ultrasuede. It's much closer to black. Kudos to Kevin Yankton (don't think he posts here) who did the same on his NG900 project. Got the idea from him.

hahah... i've just figured out how to deal with those annoying cracks virtually all C900 dashes get - cover 'em! a great idea Vince, thanks for the post.

tell me, did you have any troubles getting the adhesive to stick properly, given how much Armor-All and oil/silicone crap gets wiped into the dash surface over the years? i'm wondering if you need something like Prepsol or going over the lot with 100-200 grit paper to get the surface in a gluable state?

can I ask Vince, how much material you used to cover the dash, and what the cost came to?

Cheers..
Ben (RedSled from Australia).

Looks nice... does anyone know what this Ultrasuede thing really is? I mean, I live in Finland and I can't walk into a fabric store and say "saisinko pätkän Ultrasuede- kangasta" = "Could I have a piece of Ultrasuede fabric"?

So is it like normal suede? If not, in what ways is it different?

No problems with the adhesive so far. I just cleaned the dash off nicely, with some degreaser and also a bit of interior cleaner stuff. Once it was dry, I just sprayed the adhesive on, a small section at a time, and laid the Ultrasuede on. The corners are tough though, and inevitably there is a bit of wrinkling - but this should be okay because the wrinkling is in places that should be hidden.

The Ultrasuede came out to about C$200. That was about enough to cover two dashes, but I'm only doing the one plus the kick panel. I don't really remember how much I bought, but it comes in a big roll, and I just bought maybe two or three yards' worth. Best thing - just take a spare dash to the fabric/couture shop and measure it out.

And it really was that easy John - I walked into the shop and asked if they had Ultrasuede! Well, actually, I called them first, but that is basically what I did.

Here's a link on Ultrasuede:

And Kevin Yankton's site is here too:

You know i though it was a big deal when headlinning sag, but once i took mines out and trimmed it in a grey velvet sued which only cost £17 and 3 tins of spray glue at £1.50 per tin, i re trimmed everything!
My door pocket cards, the rear piller covers.

Its really simple to do and great fun.

Only old ladies at the fabric shop...doh.

Approximatley C$200 for the Ultrasuede.

As indicated, 3M brand type 77 spray adhesive.

You can find the Ultrasuede online, some places unload it. I didn't want the hassle of buying from the US when I just drove across town instead.
