went out in car today, went to operate windscreen wash and wipe (pull and hold the stalk). Nothing happens.....keep holding........again nothing.....then start to notice light whte smoke, yes smoke, whisping up from behind the steering wheel!

do you think i could be barking up the wrong tree and its just coincidence that the washer stalk was behaving strangely and the smoke is perhaps something else? the car had only just been started so nothing was really very hot yet.

the closest i got from a forum search is the ignition switch heating up and then causing smoking.

edit: could a mod perhaps change the title of this thread to: smoke coming from behind steering wheel?

update: i think this can be narrowed down to the washer stalk. pull it towards you and nothing happens, no washer pump, no sweep of the windscreen wipers and no headlamp wipers. Didnt get any smoke today, but i think that may have been because i wasnt repeatedly trying it and holding it on for long goes lke i was yesterday.

off to the bay for a second hand stalk then!
