Hi all. I am considering a 1999 Saab 9-3 SE Turbo (convertible). It has 87K miles on it. I showed it to a mechanic recently and he said that for some reason the oil was real dirty. So I went back to the Saab dealer in Houston and mentioned this to him. I havent bought the car yet. In the meantime I did a little research and found out that many Saabs with high miles on it have the "Sludge problem". What is this? Is it to do with bad oil? I wonder if the Saab I am looking at has this problem or its initial symptoms?

Is there a way to know if this problem is there in the car? What could be the solution to this issue. I also heard that GM knew about such a problem, but refused to provide any assistance to get it fixed for the Saabs.

Any ideas, views, suggestion will be much appreciated. Thank you guys.

There is a screen on the top of the oil pan that can get gunked up, the way to check this is to drop the oil pan and physically look at the screen itself.
