I have a '04 Aero with 264k on the clock. I've owned it since about 210k and don't have the service history prior to my ownership. Recently it has began having rough cold starts. However, it runs fine. Is this a sign that my fuel pump is on its way out?

Thanks

You can test the fuel pump motor to ascertain the condition of the motor.

The DC pump motor has an 8 segment commutator. Brushes contact this commutator. When one or several of the segments go bad the pump will fail when the pump stops on a bad segment.

you need an automotive oscilloscope and a current probe. Many mechanics have these, or they can be a couple hundred bucks or less investment.

Basically you look at the current pattern that the pump motor produces and it gives you an inside look at the motor. Kind of like an X-ray. You can determine that the pump is wearing out and replace it preemptively.

Here is an explanation of how to do it.
