This weekend I replaced the taper pin and the shift coupling in my SPG. Talk about a pain the buttocks (spoken like Forrest Gump)!!!!

That thing was frozen in there. It took me about 7 Pabst and 2 drill bits to knock it out. But it finally shot out, bounced off something and somehow went down the back of my shirt collar. So now I have a grease-spot on the back of my neck, and a nice-shifting SPG.

The holes on the coupling were enlarged and somewhat ovalized. I knew that, I could see it when looking from the top. But the pin! Jeez, it was almost cut in half from the wear! I think that my previous owner had let the front engine mount go so long that the bucking just ate this shaky Saab coupling setup away to nearly nothing. At least that's my guess. Anyone ever have this kind of wear on their 900? They must have made my taper pin out of lead.

So, just to inject a little advice and make this into more than a 'look-here' post, if you have slop in the shifter that no easy fixes take care of, look to the coupling region... mine was bad, I could only occasionally get 5th gear... and it's no wonder! When I bought the car ($375!) it couldn't get 1st or 2nd either, quickly took care of that with a little adjustment. But now I have 5 smooth-shifting gears with a bonus one that makes the car go backwards.

The bad news: poking around, I now realize that I have two busted exhaust studs. I think I see a head-gasket/EZ-out party looming on the horizon...

To remove the pin:
Shift into 4th gear (this supports the shaft)
Remove nut
Use a heavy hammer and a heavy drift, hit the pin hard
It will fly out

It is important to hit it straight and hard, the first time.

I think part of the problem was that the threaded portion of the pin broke off after the first couple of taps. I was left with not much to whack at. Having the car on a lift would have made life easier and enabled me to get a better angle and swing.

I don't know now, but I'm guessing that there was not much metal left down on the threaded end of the pin and it was just really flimsy, that's why the threaded section busted off so easily. It sure seems that the thin end would wear nearly as much as that big end did.

Anyway, I drove it to work today and it shifts like new. Too bad I noticed those busted exhaust studs, or I'd be feeling alot better about the car as a whole. I really need to get rid of one Saab, but I seem to keep finding problems with this SPG, so am afraid to get rid of my 900S just yet.

Do leaks really burn valves? I'd always heard that, but always in reference to VW's. I can't really hear anything leaking, but there probably is something blowing by the gasket.

Jim's tip worked perfectly for me (Thanks! I didn't want to relive the experience I had on my last car...). The only thing I did differently was to unscrew the nut just to the end of the pin so that I didn't foul the threads when I hit it with the drift.

I've heard the same as Jim said, hit it hard and straight the first time cause you may not have a second. :p

That said, did you have shifter wobble before all this and did this fix it? :D

I have shifter wobble in my vert, the 91 900T and its driving me nuts, :eek: All the motor mounts have been replaced, two needed it the third didn't, no change, shifter still wobbles.

Although the motor feels like it still has some play in it, I'm wondering if it could just be in the shifter linkage, maybe a weak centering spring or something. :roll: Meh
