I thought the 9-1 wouldn't even be ready for sale until 2010/11/12 ?

Hmmm, "iconic shape" huh ? There's only these two :D

"Saab is set to wow the crowds at next July’s London motor show by unveiling a concept version of its new 9-1 entry-level model. The new car will be made at Saab’s Swedish Trollhatten HQ and will be based on GM’s new Astra-sized Delta platform. The Saab is expected to go on sale at the tail end of 2009.

So far, no news has leaked out of the exact form the new car will take. Early design studies looked at a high-roof upmarket utility vehicle, in the mould of the Mercedes A- and B-Class. However, a Saab company source in the US now say that the 9-1 will be "dramatically styled" and an "iconic" shape. The source added that the 9-1 would be "sporty enough to fit the Saab character," and have the "functionality to attract younger drivers".

Saab 9-1: a 99 Combi Coupe for the 21st century

Autocar understands that Saab has recently signed off the final form of the 9-1 and work is about to begin on the production car.

Although a pure utility vehicle has probably been ruled out the company’s classic 99 Combi Coupe – a two-door coupe with a tailgate – could be the inspiration for the 9-1.

Iconic styling in the mould of the Audi TT could also be on the menu. Both the Saab 9x and 9-3x concepts could give clues as to the final form of this vitally important model.

There’s thought to be an outside chance that US-bound versions of the 9-1 could be built in a North American GM factory.

Saab is also set to unveil a concept version of the upcoming 9-4x SUV at January’s Detroit motor show. The Freelander-rival will be built in Mexico, alongside its Cadillac BRX sister car.

what a bummer. They'll probably just come out with rubbish looking cars like the new 93 and 95. They both look bad. The front of the 93 looks good but looks wrong on that car. Those ones in the picture would make saabs look cool again.

^^ Not sure if you have seen a new 9-3 in person, but the front looks damn good and with excellent proportions to the rest of the car. Much better than any pictures I have seen. Asides from that, that 9-3 concept drawing is simply breath taking. I want one.

Although I drive a newer saab, i love the C900 shape. When i first saw "Iconic" I got pretty excited. They say that, but the Turbo X was supposed to take styling cues from the old 900 Turbo, and the only thing I could tell was the same color paint.

I drove by a Saab dealership today and saw several new 9-3's with the new front and back driving around and the new front does look very good. The wrapp-around hood does remind me of the iconic 7-'s Turbo 900 saab -- and that is a good thing.

The plastic-looking new lights on the rear are bad though. Saab says they are "icelandic or swedish" looking but the ice theme isn't reading well enough. It looks too cheap. They need to spend more time and money on it. The iPod's original glass cover face (iPod gen 1) looked expensive because the lexan glass cover was wicked thick and heavy looking - hence expensive looking.

Weight or gravatis is important to looking not cheap and expensive. Saab needs to take another pass at the "ice" theme and if they can't get it to look expensive, than ditch it and just make nice lights like Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

nice metal look, reminds me of Apple's new iMac or Mac Pros, sweet!

Saab should bring back the metal look. It looks solid, expensive, et.c

Haven't seen an '08 in person yet  but IMHO the SS & CVT's tailights are much more Ricelandic than icelandic.

I do like the SC's lights though :)

I really hope that someone at GM corporate saw this image and liked it, that shape would be perfect for the next-gen 9-3. It's distinctive, eye-catching, with plenty of aero-X cues. The wraparound windshield, beltline, and C-pillar are all classic saab, and along with the wide stance it sets the design apart from the rest of the entry-luxury offerings. The wide fenders and pushed-out wheel cutouts do a great job of saying "this car is sporty AND AWD".

I know it's just a fan photochop, but I can only hope that the next-gen 9-3 looks something close to that.

^ Don't think the 25-30 inch wheels would fly though
you talk about it like it's a bad thing....

personally I think anything bigger than 17's are stupid unless you have the massive brakes to go along with your wheels.
