I know kill stories are sort of frowned upon here but I just had to post this. It also took place from a traffic light leading onto a highway on ramp so we didn't break the law (120kph speed limit in SA). so here goes. Up till now I assumed the BMW M3 was a lot faster than my Saab but today I got a big surprise (not as big as the surprise the M3 dude got) M3 dude stops next to me and smirks my way I smirk back, the light changes and we go, right from launch I was a nose ahead of him:eek: and my Saab just kept going, by 3rd gear I was 4 car lengths ahead and then I backed off for traffic. M3 dude pulls in next to me and shakes his head and gives me the thumbs up. Boy I'm so stoked with my car right now.

Jules

ps. We are at high altitude up here so any N/A car suffers a bit.

Nice Work Jules!

Was it the E36 M3 or the new one? I've always been pretty confident the Vig could pull on a stock E36 in the right situation.

I saw one of the older, 4 cylinder M3's parked near my house yesterday. Those things are so cool and rare!

I bet that guy is looking at aftermarket turbochargers right now:roll: ... Or SAABs:cheesy:

The other month, I had what looked like a 3 series bimmer follow me up the highway ramp. I accelerated fast up on to the highway speed as I usually do. He did the same, so I put my foot in it and kept going. He kept going to but I was slowly pulling away. Once we got up to higher speeds and he gave up, I slowed down. 2 miles later he passes me as I was cruising in the slow lane and to my amazement it was a newer M3:eek: . Who knows how hard he was pushing....I have never driven an M3 so I don't know what they are capable of. But 3rd and 4th gear pull in the Saab is mind blowing!!!

I know I was just as surprised but I have no reason to exaggerate or lie.

It does seem hard to believe if you look at the stats of the M3 but if you look at it like this it makes sense.

The M3 0-60 is 5.2 seconds at sea level, up at our altitude (5500ft) you can add about a second to that time for a N/A car so you end up with 6.2 seconds

From what I have read a standard 9-3 SE HOT should do a 7.1 second 0-60 (Turbo cars don't suffer as much at altitude) after the mods I have done and my Stage 3 ecu I should be at least a second faster which will put me at around 6.0 or maybe better. I never thought it would be but it seems it is:cheesy: :cheesy:

This is true! The T-7 in the Vig is able to increase its peak boost from ~16 psi to ~20 psi to help maintain the same absolute pressure at altitude. Silly NA cars can't do that. I bet most regular turbo cars can't either.

Yeah SAAB engineering!

I think I can now qualify for a new number plate

I was thinking of

I 8 A M3

Jules

ps. I also see that the M3 is almost 200kg heavier than my Vert
How about "I 8 AN M3" so when it's read aloud it still sounds right. ;)

Good job! I've not packed up one of the new ones in the Viggen, but a fare share of E36 M3's have been left with their tail between their legs. Maybe I should move to high altitude. :D

OK. As a small personal, subjective test, I'll flash my lights at the next M3 I come up behind in the outside lane of the A1 (interstate) and see what happens :cheesy:

Wow, what a confidence booster! By the way, I know you've been having the mishaps with bsr right now, is this with the stage 3 ppc loaded? I imagine it must be, but that's awesome man.

Yea I am using the Stage 3 BSR. Its the strangest thing. The first time I loaded the update my car hardly ran I had the worst detonation I have ever heard and it was not boosting much at all. I then reset the car to stock and after e-mailing BSR all they said was my fuel was not good enough (93Ron). Just to test I then went to reload the Stage 3 only to get a "Read Car" message from the PPC. This was Very odd and again BSR claimed it was nothing wrong on their side. They offered to make my stage 1 available for download as stage 3 was not working. After a download and some amazing performance I find out from BSR that they never made the Stage 1 available and all they did was reload my Stage 3 ?????

So all I can think is that they made a boo boo on my original stage3 and fixed it the second time round. So on the same fuel my stage 3 is working perfectly.

So I guess your problems are solved? That's great. Maybe they knew something was wrong and just wanted to trick you into getting the new stage 3 without admitting they were wrong?

last year at a drivers school I was grouped with severl E46 M3's none of which pulled me in the straights. Unfortunantly with a good driver they would pull me through the turns howver fortunantly out of the 6 E46's only 1 was quicker in the turns :)

so much fun & it surprised the crap out of me to!! Same is true with the STi, no or minimal acceleration adv

as much as I like my saab and stuff I am a bit skeptical about some of these claims. Simply said, a stock sti will definately pull many modded saabs. sti is basically a toned down racecar. m3s and stis are great track cars. not that saabs arent, but its hard to compare fwd

I agree BUT all these times were done by a pro racing driver. I know of many people who drive high powered cars that don't have a clue when it comes to fast driving (A friend of mine has a Sti and he is too scared to drive it like it should be driven, He bought it for the image:confused: ) A race driver in a good car will make a noob in a better car look like a fool any day.

You're right on Jules. A freaking GTI could probably beat an M3 depending on who is driving each! This is why a good driving school could be the best money you ever spent to make your car faster.

stromer - 2000 viggen, stock HP, VRK, rear sway bar, toyo T1s

Julian, like others have stated & like I stated as well a good driver should of beaten me in both the E46's & STi's however that was NOT the case! If the same driver drove both cars there is no doubt in my mind that my viggen would be sevaral seconds slower however when you have normal non racecar drivers taking laps it's more about driver skill then the cars ability & was at the limit of my car & I know they were NOT! There was also a 911 (993) that was in my group & my instructor was laughing his *** off. He kept on saying could you imagine how pissed you would be driving a 911 & having a fwd 4dr sedan turning quicker laps :) He also stated that I was a A driver (most experienced group) with a -B car, technically the worst car on the track that day!

Still a TON of fun in ANY car!

With those lap times, I would think a viggen would be slightly quicker around a track then a aero due to it's lighter weight however still way short of the M3, etc. I would like to see how it would compare to a E36 since that's more the car the viggen was built to compete with :)

& BTW, the Atom ROCKS!!!
