There are two flex sections in the exhaust. One is part of the downpipe. If that needs to be replaced, you'll either need to replace the entire downpipe, which is expensive because it contains both catalytic converters, or have an exhaust shop weld a new flex section in. The second flex section is part of the intermediate pipe. You can buy that part from Esaabparts.com or probably any Saab parts supplier. Esaabparts is great, though.
As soon as one shop welds something, the bolt-on parts no longer work. As this has likely happened to 95% of the Saabs in Canada, we're stuck welding on other parts to a welded-up system.
The flex pipes seem to be one of the likeliest places for an exhaust leak on these cars.
The flex section on the downpipe could be replaced and still keep the bolt-together functionality of the exhaust system. They'd just have to reuse the flanged section. I wouldn't think that would be all that hard.
If we're talking the flex section on the downpipe, Have them carefully mark the alignment angle of the upper and lower sections before removing the pipe from the car.
Insist on a stainless steel replacement flex section
