Hello All,

I have recently purchased a Saab 9-5 2008 1.9TID Automatic Vector sport estate

Love the car first SAAB for me, However when left to rest over night I get a plume of white smoke when starting, The car turns over slowly and then will eventually fire into action, It will run quite gurgly roughly for around 10 to 20 seconds before smoothing out, Once it's warm it will fire up ok still a small amount of smoke and a slow turn over however but is significantly worse when left to sit, It does always start,

I also have the dredded window issues however new rollers en route thanks to the great things you guys do on this forum!

Many Thanks any insight or info would be greatly appreciated,

Ben

Update - after some initial checks today I can rule out,

Battery Terminals tight and secure
Battery testing ok
Charging at 13.6V not great ?
Headlights enjoy a occasional flicker alternator related?
Engine temperature read out on clock all over the place up and down possible fault, Car does not cook

Next stop is the grounds around the car,

Diagnostic read fault code p1109 intake manifold tuning valve solenoid control circuit

p1110 Swirl actuator circuit open circuit

These have been cleared and not yet returned

Hi and welcome.
13,6 volts in idle is not normal, I'd replace alternator to BOSCH (not Denso).

Do you have xenon headlights? If yes, replace bulbs (D1S) ASAP to Philips or Osram. No name junks do not work with 9-5 and they could destroy ballasts, which are expensive.
If you have halogen headlights, alternator replace will help.

P1109 in EDC16C39 (Z19 DTH diesel) means swirl flap incorrect signal. I'd check carefully swirl flaps and connecting rod between them and actuator.
P1110 is not valid DTC for EDC16C39.
I'd junk guessing machine.

Temp gauge: Read live values with TECH2.

Thankyou for this Mimmi, I will go for genuine bulbs tommorow, Ah I thought so too alternator will have to be a job for next month Thankyou, Will investigate the swirl flaps soon and give that a look into,

As to the starting issue I have found a very large carbon deposit on cylinder 1 right by the injector so I am crossing fingers it's a injector leak down by the copper washers, I have cleaned the carbon away but will need to investigate this tommorow further.

Thankyou all again for your help

Replace injector also.
Remember to use original Saab injector. It needs to "tell" to EDC with TECH2.
Without this, you can not reach full power and full fuel economic. Car can also vibrate etc.

Hello All again, And Thankyou Mimmi for your advice,

A update on the current situation with the car, Injector was replaced with Saab injector however having trouble coding this to the engine, All diagnostic machines I have tried are unable to contact ECU error, Car is running ok however the said injector is noisy,

White smoke and slow cranking in the morning still continues, Had the first failiure to start this morning, With some Jump leads it did fire up but with a heavy back log of white smoke, I've recently been doing short journeys which I believe may have contributed to the battery kicking out on me this morning, That compared with the poor alternator performance, i plan on putting a recon Bosch alternator but I don't want to chuck more money at the car until I can get to the bottom of the smoking

My next port of call will be the glow plugs, I don't quite trust my multimeter readings on them as the area was quite tight and I struggle with a steady hand, Will be putting new units in this week,

Another question I had regarding the swirl flap fault code, I am having trouble locating these under the hood to do a fairy liquid bubble test to check for leaks, My knowledge of this is pretty limited I know about delete kit but the code I'm getting is open circuit, I've checked all connectors around the fuel system and appear to be ok.

Any knowledge or suggestions would still be greatly appreciated, I really want to keep this car on the road.

Thankyou All

Did you use TECH2 when you tried to reprogramming injector?
If yes, what sw you have in TECH2 and did you also have security access?

You can check glow plugs with multimeter:
Remove key(fob) from ignition lock and input it to your pocket (do not listen car radio either).
Remove connector from glow plug. Use OHM setting in multimeter and put lead to glow plug connector and another lead to reliable grounding point (I use cyl head).
If glow plug is OK, you will find 0.9 OHM (+/- 0.2 OHM). If you get anything else, replace glow plug. Use original glow plug only.
