Hi everyone,

I tried searching for an answer but there are so many posts.

I have a Saab 9-3 2.0 litre standard sedan manufactured 1999.

My MAF device has been giving me 'check engine' light warnings with increasing frequency. (After cleaning it each time) So I decided to replace it.

The part number on the plastic body is 0280217105. EBay seems to to be the major source for these, but this part number is always recorded as suitable for Saab 900 1998. Search as I may, I can't find that part number associated with a Saab 93.

I guess they are the same. Just looking for confirmation that they are the same...and the electronic calibration doesn't have any differences.

Please can someone confirm they are the same (interchangeable).

Second question...there seems to be an amazing range of non-OEM replacement parts. Which ones are "good"? Mine has a Bosch sensor...

1999s have T5 engines, which share many parts with the 900s. In 2000, 9-3s changed to T7 engines.

I'm guessing that's a Bosch part number - for your info the Saab catalogue says 4780185 for your car and also the '98 900.

You asked about non-OEM parts. Its a minefield out there. Some essentials where no substitutions should be accepted are the CPS (crank position sensor) which I believe should be Bosch on yours, and the DIC (OEM maker is SEM AB, taken over by NGK in N America) and whatever plugs are specified in your owners manual. The DIC was designed to work with the characteristics of the exact specified plugs and although it will start and run with any old plugs, even reputed brands, stick with the OEM. Imitation DICs will run too, but not for long and will not deal with high demand very well.

As another member said on here recently, better a known good used SEM than a brand new one made of chinesium (or words to that effect). I agree, having never had a new DIC, and I wouldn't bother with non-SEM except perhaps as an emergency get-you-home spare.

We read many "buy cheap, buy twice" stories of a Swedish maker called ProParts. For example suspension bushes and engine mounts. Unfortunately even Orio, the prime "OEM" supplier who took over the business when Saab disappeared, are suspected of sending out PPS parts sometimes, when the original stuff is no longer manufactured.

There is a UK supplier called Neo Brothers which also generates some comment. For example this might instill confidence:-

but there's no embossed "SEM AB" on it, the black paint line is straight whereas on SEMs its fuzzy edged as if sprayed with no masking (pointed out by another member on here), and if that's a date code on the sticker, its the wrong way around (should be year first, then week)

I don't know how up to date my Saab parts catalogue is but that part number is unknown. The "Original" sticker uses the same typeface as Saab. It is clearly original, as in it originated somewhere, but I wonder where.

As the others above have said..
This is a DIC > they are Red or Black.
Normally Black = T7, and Red = T5.

If you know your Engine Code as well it would be handy to know, because some cars manufactured in 1999, were technically 2000 models based on the VIN.
My OG9-3 is a very early 2000 VIN, but contains a 99 build plate stamp.

Just investigating that myself. On the basis that there did exist '99 9-3s with Motronic, I believe the Saab part number quoted earlier 4780185 is applicable for that engine. How to line that up with the Bosch number I don't know.

Interesting. I was just working on the assumption that a 99 OG9-3 was likely to be a T5 or T7, Apologies to the OP.

Yes... different countries. Not available in the USA but it was in other markets. Also note that the S model can be turbo in some markets.

I very strongly recommend checking out Rock Auto these guys are in USA and I am in England and it worked out cheaper for me to buy 3 original Bosch ignition coils and a set of spark plugs for my 2006 2.8 sportwagon pay the taxes and shipping to the uk 🇬🇧 and it worked out roughly the same as buying 2 coils here in the uk (about £60 each here ) amazing value and they arrived within 5 days of me ordering God bless America 👍🏻
