The coupe has no reverse....All gears work without effort to engage.
On the lift in neutral, the drive wheel will spin...
The shift lever, I lifted off of the stalk. So some locking mechanism to hold it in place is missing or broken. I knew the lever could rotate but never discovered I could lift it up.
Is this a linkage/shifter kind of problem? The reverse gear never grinds, crashes or anything nasty, the gear cannot be engaged. And yes, the lever goes into position to get the key out of the ignition.

Thnx In Advance....

I think you have located the problem - this may be rather complex, maybe the WIS is necessary to find out exactly what is broken and why... But I did all the work( change the inner steering joints, adjust the shift, renew the bushings) on the VW without any book; but I did have experience.... and the confidence.:cheesy:

Good luck:cheesy:
