I am told there is a special tool for the rear brakes, but I haven't looked at it yet. Is that true?

Harbor Freight Tools sell one that's not too expensive. They sell an 18 piece caliper set for about $40. I just did the rear brakes on my 06 and all you need is something to push the piston back in. The pistons don't screw in on my 2006 Saab. The aero may be different though.

Needle nose pliers and lots of strength :)

make sure you push in first, then turn. Otherwise you'll be turning forever with no progress.
