rubber gaskets of hatch and rear passenger window/door all LOOK ok, nothing obviously rotted or torn.

Does the rear hatch gasket lose sealing ability with age from crushing into new shape? Car (new to me) was never DRIVEN in rain in last few months, and had smell from before.

Ain't the hatch supposed to be at least rain proof just from how water drains even without a gasket, at least if just sitting in rain, like a house's roof and gutters???

Yeah, I pulled a couple of the big drain covers in the trunk, to air it out and hopefully mitigate it from happening again, but would still like water tight car.

Check the taillight gaskets and make sure that the sunroof drain hoses are both seated in the rubber grommets in the hatch floor.
