I have just spent ages getting the stereo right in my 1990 convertible - i now have a pioneer cd / tuner - infinity speakers front and rear and an active sub in the boot.

it sounds fantastic on cd and fm. on am, however, there is a loud whine which seems to get louder and louder. i have read about other people with similar problems. i realise that am is an inferior radio frequency but i will use it for football commentary when the season begins.

is there anything i can do to loose the whining noise?

If it's a whine that increases with engine speed, I would suspect you are hearing alternator whine, you can get a suppressor that goes to the main alternator feed & the body of the suppressor to earth.

Another thing you can try is grounding the back of the radio. Just take a wire and connect it to the back of your stereo, the head unit itself and then attach the other end to a good ground on the body of the car.
