Has anyone any experience of fitting a different (manual) rack to a 99? I need a quick rack for my rally car and am stuck for ideas. I know the EMS rack is fewer turn but is still 3.5, not really a quick rack, and they appear to be like hens teeth. Plenty of MK2 escort racks available but looks like I would have to mount inboard of the pinion hole, and probably extend the control arms to suit the 99. Any better ideas chaps?

Could you fit a 900 power steering rack, but block off the ports to the pump to run it as a manual rack? I think the 900 power rack is only something like 2.5 turns lock to lock, and it already has the right dimensions in terms of steering geomtery, but you might have to modify it (grind bits of the housing down and alter the mounting point) to make it fit I would have thought..

Unless you can find an EMS rack you will have to retrofit something else, as for what you could fit, i have no idea, and would the extra work involved be really worth it?
The EMS rack is 3.4, standard rack is 4.1.
Shorter racks are available from Sweden but these are LHD, i did look into having EMS rack gears reproduced, but the main companies that were approached could not help because the diameter of the rack gear was too large for their machines. You could ask Quaife for a quote on a rack and maybe a group buy could be started, you could also ask for an even shorter rack.
